Stunning tourist spots in Provence - St Paul de Vence

Saint Paul de Vence was founded in the 9th century. The main reason why people decided to move to the mountains and stay to live here was to protect themselves and their families from the enemies coming from the sea. Fortified village was supposed to be shelter for them.

In the first half of the 13th century the village became the ownership of Lord of Provence. In 1227 the city market was founded in the village. This was a nice opportunity for the famous families to start coming to St Paul de Vence.

The village was rebuilt after the unprofessional reconstruction 700 houses were destroyed and local people were forced to leave to other villages. In 1832 they started the reconstruction works of the fortress.

In 1870 the village stops being a strategic point and the buildings were bought by the Mayer’s office. Since then the city started attracting plenty of art people. Due to its charm and wonderful location it became a favorite place of Matiss, Shagal, Renuar, Modiliani, Cocto and Prever.
